Principal Maurice is transforming TCHS

TRENTON – Marc Maurice was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, then attended grade school in Montclair, high school in Montreal and college at Seton Hall University.

But his path to Trenton Central High School isn’t what’s important to city leaders and residents. What matters is he’s the principal now, and he’s working hard to make the school a better place to learn.

“I do not know where Mr. Maurice comes from, but he has made significant changes in the behavior of the students. He asked for help from our organization and we are providing it,” said Cameron Hunt, president of Trenton Council of Civic Associations.

Maurice, 56, has become known for his leadership skills and perseverance in the nearly two years he’s been principal of more than 1,900 Trenton High students.

“Mr. Maurice is a man with big ideas to improve Trenton schools. When a student’s family is in need of help he goes directly to the Board of Education to make their voices heard,” said Waldemar Ronquillo, a former board member.

Maurice has been a school administrator in Trenton for nearly 12 years, with previous stints as principal at Holland Middle School and Franklin Elementary School.

He firmly believes all communities are entitled to a nurturing school, where all members of the school family work diligently to address the needs of students. He has always tried to rally the community to inspire people to improve the schools.

“I’m working with teachers, parents and community members in order to transform the culture and academic practices of the high school,” Maurice said. It is not unusual to find Maurice meeting with community and religious leaders to talk about finding ways to combat the social problems common in urban school districts.

One of his goals has been to create a safe learning environment. He has met with the parents of consistently unruly students, and some have been placed in alternative programs.

Trenton, like other cities, lags behind other districts in student test scores. But Maurice noted an improvement in the language arts segment of the school’s HSPA scores, and he is working toward showing even more improvement in all areas.

Maurice is planning a summer program as well as a new schedule for incoming ninth graders. The new curriculum consists of a block and a half of math and language arts classes. Students will no longer select electives until their sophomore year, ensuring they stay on track for graduation.

Maurice said he also has been “working to find ways to promote student success. To that end we have been working closer with teachers on strategies they can use to individualize instruction and making them more sensitive to student needs creating a climate that is conducive to learning.”

But it’s not all work for the principal. Maurice enjoys playing tennis and soccer and his favorite baseball team is the Phillies; he speaks French, Creole and Spanish, and currently lives in Burlington with his wife, Jill, and their four children.
